Background
Additionally, this disjointed setup negatively impacted user traffic, search engine rankings, and made the site vulnerable to failures, and unauthorised access. The inefficiencies also led to a lower conversion rate, resulting in fewer visitors and bookings.
Recognising these issues, the hotel reached out to me to redesign, rebuild, and update their website to create a more cohesive, secure, and user-friendly experience.
Our challenge
As a full-time Lead UX/UI Designer, I often take on side projects through referrals during my free time. These additional activities, which focus on online solutions, websites, and applications, are essential for me to stay current and connected with my core expertise and creativity. They also provide an opportunity to challenge myself with new tasks, trends, and expectations from clients outside the scope of my regular 9-to-5 job.
I find these side projects incredibly rewarding, as they allow me to explore new techniques and tools, and continue my professional growth. While my primary employment responsibilities and workload can be demanding, I make it a priority to take on these projects when my schedule permits.
In this particular project, I served as the lead designer, collaborating closely with stakeholders and a developer who handled the website’s coding. This role allowed me to apply my skills in a new context, delivering a solution that met the client’s needs while pushing my own boundaries as a designer.
In this side project, I took on the role of lead UX designer and web designer to completely redesign and upgrade the website for LA Hotel, based on the customer’s specific requests. My goal was to create a modern, user-friendly website that would improve the booking process and enhance the overall user experience.
I began by thoroughly analysing the existing website, conducting a rapid evaluation to identify its strengths and weaknesses. I also performed quick market research and competitor benchmarking to understand industry standards and how LA Hotel's website compared.
From the initial analysis, I categorised the necessary features, functions, and systems that needed to be implemented to address the existing issues. This included the booking system, graphical elements, and the overall site structure. By defining these needs, I was able to outline clear project objectives and goals, ensuring that the redesign would effectively solve the problems identified.
Next, I moved into the exploration phase, where I iterated on various concepts and ideas. I created sketches and explored potential technical solutions, evaluating which systems and platforms would be the most feasible for each target task. This process was crucial for ensuring that the final product would be robust, free from failures, and easy to navigate.
A clear understanding of project objectives, problem statements, and goals.
In-depth market research and competitor analysis.
Comprehensive user research, leading to detailed personas and user journey maps.
Conducted user research to understand the needs, pain points, and behaviors of our target audience.
Successful ideation and concept development, with regular check-ins and updates.
A well-organised information architecture and intuitive navigation system.
Iterating and Testing Sketches/Wireframes: Multiple sketches or wireframe concepts are created, tested, and iterated upon to identify the most effective solution.
These outcomes set the stage for a successful project by ensuring that the we had a clear understanding of the problem, has explored a range of potential solutions, and is prepared to create a user-centred design that meets all project requirements.
June 2024
With a clear direction established from the initial project understanding phase, I began the design phase by developing detailed user personas.
I then focused on the information architecture, organising content and features logically to create an intuitive and seamless user experience. To bring the design to life, I started with low-fidelity wireframes, laying out the basic structure and functionality of the website.
I then created a clickable prototype, which enabled us to visualise the user experience and conduct early usability testing.
Throughout the design phase, I conducted some user research, such as interviews, surveys with potential users and some usability testing's. These tests were conducted at different stages of production to ensure the design was both functional and user-friendly.
I also prepared and organised all design assets, interactive prototypes, and detailed specifications for a seamless handover to the developer.
My involvement didn’t end with the handover. I remained actively engaged throughout the development process, providing support to the developer.
Once the website was built, I collaborated with the developer to test the site on a demo platform. This testing phase was crucial for validating the functionality, performance, and usability of the new website. I conducted thorough reviews and tests of the design solution to ensure it was fully functional and met all the requirements.
I also facilitated regular design review workshops or meeting with the customer/stack holder & the developer, ensured that all aspects of the design were aligned with the project goals.
Outcome and Next Steps
The result of our efforts was a well-crafted, user-centred website that was successfully launched. The new site significantly improved the user experience, offering intuitive navigation, seamless functionality, and a cohesive design that met and exceeded the initial goals, the customer’s expectations and solved the users problem.
The next steps will focus on marketing the new website to attract and engage users, ensuring its success in driving traffic and increasing bookings for the LA Hotel.
